Assignment #1: Signs Have Parts
Read the Introduction in the ASL Handshape Dictionary and discuss "Signs Have Parts" in one short paragraph of approximately 100 words. After writing your discussion, you can sign off with your E-name that I've assigned to you in the class today.

Rereading the pages I connected with all that went on in class. However, it made a better connection that it has in the past. Experienceing the signs without vocalizatin and recentering myself on the rules of ASL will be helped by this reading. A question arises in this language. I've taken Japanese and finally got to a point where I could respond (a little) without translation. In otherwords I was thinking in Japanese. Does "thinking" in ASL happen?

after class i went to the mall to look for the required book (the american sign language handshape dictionary) and boarders express did not have the book. i purchased 'signing for dummies' in its place to get started. i will go to boarders on friday and look there then resort to an internet order, i hope i will get it on maui b4 the end of the class.

I apologize for not posting earlier. I am very happy about being a part of this class. I don't remember a lot of vocabulary since I learned ASL in an informal and indirect way. But, I am here to be immersed, which I believe is the best way to learn ASL.

I really enjoyed the class. It is a little hard to follow without speaking, but that makes me appreciative of my ability to hear. Class really takes a lot of concentration and effort.
The parts of signs are interesting concepts that give a good overview of how signs are "built". I think it was a good ground work for the rest of the class.
Since I have not been able to get a book yet, I cannot comment on the readings, but I would like to suggest making arrangements for the next class to either have books preordered for them or let them know more than a week in advance that they need to order them on their own. I think that it would have been easier for me to acclimate to the class had I been able to do the reading in a timely manner.
